Frequently asked questions
Can you get cancer of stone wool? Do you have to wear protective clothing when working with the insulation?
KIMMCO-ISOVER markets stone wool with mineral wool fibers that meet the requirements of Note Q under the European CLP Regulation, and the fibers are therefore not classified as carcinogenic. The mechanical effect of fibers that come into contact with the skin can cause temporary pruritus, but the problems disappear when you leave the workplace and washed by you. A good basic rule when working with mineral wool is to not expose you to unnecessary dust. Appropriate work clothes and protective gloves are recommended when working with mineral wool.
Why to insulate?
Insulation is necessary to reduce energy consumption, sound pollution and improve the comfort and quality of life in new or existing buildings regardless of the construction system. Ervironmental Qualily insulation fights global warming as it reduces greenhouse gases. Insulating your home is an ecological process. The signing of the Kyoto agreements was a major stage in collective awareness of the need to protect the environment by fighting global warming.
What is mineral wool?
Mineral wool is the common name for glass wool and stone wool.
Glass wool has a low weight, is durable and has good strength. It is suitable for soft insulation products, for example between wood and steel lines. The unique characteristics of the glass wool have also made it possible for KIMMCO-ISOVER to develop a complete range of products. Thanks to its excitement and structure, the glass can handle the high demands on load. The glass wool is also used in the form of pipe bowls for insulation of pipes and slabs and carpets for technical insulation.
Heat and insulation, how does it actually work?
Everyone needs heat in our houses to not freeze and to have a nice and comfortable indoor climate. How much is needed depends on the outdoor temperature, but also how well the house is about retaining the heat already available.
What is lambda value?
Heat conductivity is the property that indicates how well a material insulates. It is denoted by the Greek letter lambda λ and the unit is W / m · K. Lambda value is independent of the thickness of the material. The lower the lambda value, the better the insulation material.
Can you get better insulation by compressing the mineral wool?
You can reduce the lambda value (increase insulation ability) slightly by compression and higher density up to some extent. But at the same time you reduce the thickness and it is more important than the lambda value. One should therefore strive to have custom thicknesses.
What is the difference between glass wool and stone wool?
Glass wool is a high-tech product, mainly made from sand and recycled glass, and stone wool is made from volcanic rock - a natural material present in large quantities throughout the earth. but both are called mineral wool. The production method for the two types is not quite the same as you can also see a difference in the fiber structure of the products.
How will the thermal insulation performance change when not applying thickness of stone wool as decided but by crushing and thinning it?
Heat insulation performance of thermal insulation is expressed by thermal resistance and thermal resistance is calculated by dividing "thickness of insulation material" by "thermal conductivity of insulation material".
Thermal resistance (R-value) (㎡ · K / W) = thickness (m) / thermal conductivity (W / m · K)
Does stone wool contain asbestos?
KIMMCO-ISOVER stone wool product contain no asbestos.
Are irritation caused by stone wool dangerous? Can they be avoided?
Superficial and temporary irritation of the skin after handling stone wool is mechanical and not chemical. It causes no allergies and disappears once rinsed with water.
What is STC value ?
STC (Sound Transmission Class) value is a single number rating to specify the reduction in sound levels that the partition provides. The sound transmission loss performance of a partition is measured using ASTM E 90 "Standard Test Method for Laboratory Measurement of Airborne Sound Transmission Loss of Building Partitions and Elements" and calculated according to ASTM E 413 "Classification for Rating Sound Insulation." As a general rule, the higher the STC rating, the better the partition's acoustical performance.
What is the STC rating of a stone wool insulation ?
Stone wool insulation does not have a STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating, but the use of stone wool insulation within a partition assembly can increase the STC rating by up to 10 points. An STC rating indicates the reduction of sound transmission through a partition assembly, not each individual element.
Can a higher STC value be achieved if faced stone wool insulation instead of un-faced insulation is used in a partition ?
There is no change in STC value of a partition assembly.
Are KIMMCO-ISOVER stone wool building insulation products Non-combustible?
Yes, KIMMCO-ISOVER un-faced stone wool insulation is rated non-combustible when tested in accordance to ASTM E 136, BS 476(Part 7) ,ISO 1182 and EN 13501 .
